Shoreham by Sea

Sunshine Nursery, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex

01. The Brief

The project involved a substantial extension to Sunshine Nursery, a much-loved and growing early years setting at the heart of the Shoreham community. The aim was to provide additional learning and play spaces while maintaining the welcoming, nurturing atmosphere that defines the nursery’s character.
The design sought to create a sympathetic extension that complements the existing building in both form and materiality. A glazed link was introduced to provide a light-filled connection between the original structure and the new addition, ensuring a seamless transition while preserving the integrity of the existing architecture. The new spaces were designed to support the nursery’s expanding capacity, with a focus on flexibility, natural light, and child-friendly proportions.

02. Challenges & Considerations

Integrating the extension within the established site required a sensitive approach to scale and appearance. The design needed to enhance functionality and circulation without disrupting the familiar environment that children, staff, and parents value. Achieving visual harmony between the old and new buildings while maximising daylight and outdoor connectivity was a central consideration.
