Light-Filled Rear Extension in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex

This project involved designing a striking rear extension with vaulted ceilings, expansive glazing and open-plan living space tailored to modern family life. The aim was to create a seamless connection between the home and garden, making the interior feel brighter, more spacious and better suited to both everyday living and entertaining.

01. The Brief

This project was designed to create a spacious rear extension that would transform the home into a bright, sociable and beautifully connected living environment. The clients wanted to move away from a more enclosed layout and create a space that felt open, modern and designed around the way they live day to day.

The aim was to introduce a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and seating area with a strong connection to the garden, while ensuring the finished design still felt warm, practical and welcoming. Natural light, clean architectural lines and a timeless interior feel were all central to the brief.

02. Challenges & Considerations

A key challenge for this project was balancing openness with comfort. The extension needed to feel expansive and full of light, but also remain inviting and well proportioned for everyday family life.To achieve this, the design introduced a dramatic vaulted ceiling and a glazed gable end, helping to create a sense of volume and openness while framing views out to the garden. Large-format sliding doors and rooflights were carefully positioned to flood the interior with daylight and enhance the relationship between the home and outdoor space.

Structurally, the design relied on steel supports to achieve the wide spans required for the open-plan arrangement. These elements were thoughtfully integrated into the overall design, with exposed steelwork adding subtle character and reinforcing the contemporary feel of the extension. Internally, distinct zones for dining and relaxation were created without interrupting the flow of the space.

03. The Outcome

The finished extension delivers a calm, elegant and light-filled space that has completely changed how the home is experienced. The open-plan layout now provides a natural hub for family life, whether cooking, dining, entertaining or simply relaxing.The combination of feature glazing, rooflights and vaulted ceilings gives the interior a bright and uplifting quality, while the materials and detailing help maintain a warm and grounded feel throughout. The connection to the garden is now a defining feature of the home, with uninterrupted views and easy access helping the inside and outside spaces work together effortlessly.

The result is a contemporary extension that not only adds space, but enhances the overall quality of living — creating a home that feels brighter, more generous and better suited to modern life.
