Extension at Hillview, Rottingdean, East Sussex

“Darryl is a personable, professional architect with the ability to produce your vision. He has great ideas and is a pleasure to work with. I would definitely work with him again and recommend 100%.”

01. The Brief

Our client wanted a high-end contemporary extension with uninterrupted views of the Sussex National South Downs and the English Channel. The space needed to be modern, filled with natural light, and suitable for entertaining, while still being a practical family home.
The extension had to tie in seamlessly with the existing property and reflect the client’s unique style. As a practice experienced in high-end residential design, we focused on creating a functional, beautiful space that incorporated the latest materials and design trends, all delivered with exceptional attention to detail.

02. Challenges & Considerations

A key part of the client’s vision was a gable end made entirely of glass. To achieve this, we needed to vault the interior roof, which required close collaboration with the structural engineer to maintain the integrity of the build.

This detail presented challenges, but it also added a dramatic dimension to the internal space and significantly enhanced its visual appeal. With careful planning and coordination, we ensured that the structural requirements were met without compromising on design.

The client also emphasised the need to maximise the views while keeping the home practical and suitable for family life. Our approach focused on creating a space that was both visually striking and liveable.

03. The Outcome

The finished extension is a stylish, functional space filled with bespoke details. Oak flooring and solid oak doors bring warmth and quality throughout. Designer radiators were installed in the living room, kitchen, hallway and bathroom, adding both function and visual interest.

White Venetian blinds offer a clean, elegant finish, while the custom-built oak and glass staircase leads up to a spacious open gallery landing with a seating area. French doors open out to a south-facing garden, connecting the interior with the landscape beyond.

The result is a modern extension that feels open, calm and beautifully considered, delivering on every part of the client’s brief.
