Contemporary Rear Extension in Storrington, West Sussex

This project involved transforming an underused garage and reconfiguring the rear of the property to create a bright, elegant extension that feels fully connected to the garden. The aim was to deliver a more spacious and sociable layout for modern living, bringing together cooking, dining and relaxation in one seamless environment while enhancing natural light and making the most of the surrounding views.

01. The Brief

This project was designed to reimagine the rear of the home and unlock the potential of the existing layout. The clients wanted to create a more open and welcoming living environment that would better suit day-to-day family life, while also improving the connection between the house and garden.

A key part of the brief was to incorporate the former garage space into the wider design, allowing the home to feel more generous, better balanced and more practical. The aim was to create a contemporary extension that would sit comfortably with the existing property, while introducing bright open-plan spaces for dining, relaxing and entertaining.

02. Challenges & Considerations

One of the main considerations for this project was how to blend the new extension seamlessly with the original bungalow, both internally and externally. The design needed to feel like a natural continuation of the home, rather than an obvious addition, with careful attention given to scale, roof form and external materials.Natural light was also central to the design. Large-format glazing was introduced across the rear and corner of the extension to open up views to the garden and draw daylight deep into the living space. This helped transform what was once a more enclosed arrangement into a bright and uplifting interior that feels calm, spacious and connected to its surroundings.

Internally, the layout was carefully planned to create distinct zones for cooking, dining and relaxation without interrupting the overall flow of the space. The former garage area was reworked as part of the wider design, helping to create a more cohesive arrangement that supports modern living while making much better use of the existing footprint.

03. The Outcome

The completed project has transformed the way this home can be enjoyed. The new extension delivers a light-filled and beautifully resolved living space that feels open, comfortable and effortlessly linked to the garden beyond.Full-height glazing and wide openings create a strong visual and physical connection to the outdoor terrace, allowing inside and outside spaces to work together naturally. The result is a calm and contemporary setting that feels just as suited to quiet everyday living as it does to entertaining family and friends.

By reconfiguring the layout and incorporating previously underused space, the design has added far more than extra square footage. It has enhanced the overall quality of the home, creating a brighter, more sociable and better connected environment designed around the way the clients live.
