Contemporary Kitchen Extension in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex

This project involved creating a stylish rear extension to form a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining and living space designed around modern family life. The aim was to bring more light into the heart of the home, improve the connection to the outside space and create a layout that feels both sociable and practical for everyday living.

01. The Brief

This project was designed to transform the rear of the property into a spacious and welcoming kitchen-led extension that would better support the way the clients live day to day. The existing layout no longer offered the level of openness, light or functionality they were looking for, and the goal was to create a more connected environment for cooking, dining and spending time together.
A key part of the brief was to deliver a contemporary extension that felt calm, elegant and full of natural light, while still retaining a warm and comfortable atmosphere. The clients wanted a space that could work equally well for family life and entertaining, with strong visual links to the garden and a layout centred around a beautifully designed kitchen.

02. Challenges & Considerations

One of the main considerations for this project was how to create a generous open-plan arrangement within the constraints of the existing home, while ensuring the new space felt seamless and well balanced. The design needed to improve flow and maximise natural light without losing the sense of comfort that makes the home feel inviting. To achieve this, the extension introduced large-format glazing and glazed doors to the rear, helping to open the space out to the terrace and draw daylight deep into the interior. Rooflights were also incorporated above the kitchen and dining area to enhance the sense of brightness and create a more uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.
Internally, the layout was carefully planned around a central kitchen island, allowing the kitchen to become the focal point of the new space. This helped define natural zones for cooking, dining and socialising while maintaining a clear and uninterrupted flow. The palette of materials and detailing was chosen to give the extension a timeless feel, combining clean lines with warmth, texture and character.

03. The Outcome

The finished extension has transformed the way this home is used and enjoyed. The new kitchen, dining and living space feels bright, spacious and sociable, with a much stronger connection to the outside area and a layout that supports modern day-to-day living.
The large glazed openings and rooflights bring in an abundance of natural light, while the open-plan arrangement allows each part of the space to work together effortlessly. The kitchen now sits confidently at the heart of the home, providing a practical and stylish setting for cooking, gathering and entertaining. The result is a contemporary rear extension that enhances both the look and function of the property, creating a beautifully considered space that feels more open, more connected and far better suited to the clients’ lifestyle.
